Trilogy

Trilogy Audio Systems has been designed by one person since 1990. Nic Poulson trained with the BBC in broadcast engineering in the eighties, founded Trilogy in 1990, and remains the principal designer of every product the company makes. The corporation's standards left a mark: the way to achieve true quality is to strive for excellence in every area and accept nothing less. Trilogy is one of the very few British owned, British built manufacturers of fine audio, and the work is done back to first principles — identifying the fundamental questions at the core of each design issue, then optimising each electrical element rather than improving on what already exists.

The engineering runs along a few consistent lines. The 6H6П valve is used throughout the range for its extremely linear gain, high transconductance and high current properties, and in several products it operates in a grounded grid configuration that lets the tube produce even lower levels of distortion. Choke input power supplies are unusual today, largely for reasons of cost and space. Trilogy specifies them anyway: a large choke placed between the rectifier and the smoothing capacitor bank makes the current draw from the mains transformer almost a continuous sine wave, instead of a series of current spikes at twice the mains frequency. The stress in the power supply components and the noise produced fall away with it.

Every Trilogy power amplifier uses a compound output stage. A small linear MOSFET controls the loudspeaker, and a bank of bipolar transistors augments it with the current a demanding load requires. The result is delicacy unattainable with a MOSFET-only output stage together with enough output current to genuinely control the speaker. Where balanced operation earns its complexity it is used — the 925 and 995R are bridge amplifiers and make full use of it; the 993 and 994 are not bridge designs and so are not given a differential feed for its own sake.

The casework is part of the engineering. Machined panels, lids and side panels add mass and damp vibration. Heatsink fins vary in depth, width and spacing to reduce the main resonance to a minimum, and the high mass holds the output devices at close to constant temperature. K Material, an expensive and non-resonant material, is used for the feet on all larger products. Binding posts are pure copper Mundorf. The 906i is hand made exclusively in England; the 931i is assembled entirely by hand in Trilogy's UK workshops.

The control layer is Trilogy's own. TASlink is a proprietary link between Trilogy components that synchronises switching and carries information such as amplifier temperature and real-time current delivery to a large red dot matrix display, adjustable across nine brightness levels or set to track the ambient light. The firmware is driven by a rotary encoder with enter and escape buttons, covering volume and balance alongside timing functions, per-input naming, source level trimming and more. The Personal Remote Control is machined from billet with ball bearing buttons.

The Trilogy range — integrated amplifiers, preamplifiers, stereo and mono power amplifiers, phono stages and headphone amplifiers — is available through Alma East and Alma West.

The 921 is Trilogy's solid-state integrated amplifier, launched in 2023 and described by the company as its "entry level" model. Rather than build a preamplifier and a separate power amplifier into one chassis, Trilogy chose a single, ultra linear gain stage that does all the voltage gain necessary, connected directly to a compound output stage reminiscent of the larger Trilogy power amplifiers and using the same Japanese bipolar devices.

The topology has extremely high bandwidth, low distortion and very good loudspeaker control with only a tiny amount of overall shunt feedback. Rectification and the smoothing capacitor bank sit on each of the left and right amplifier modules, and a separate winding on the mains transformer feeds them independently. To keep signal and current paths short and minimise interaction between them, the layout is stacked: the voltage gain cell sits above the main circuit board that carries the output stage and power supply.

Rated output is 75 watts per channel into a recommended load of 3 to 16 ohms, from five pairs of RCA inputs. All of its voltage gain comes from a 6H6П super tube, a Russian military triode chosen for its high transconductance and low mu. The valve operates in Class A in a grounded grid configuration with zero negative feedback. Because of the output stage's topology the valve sees only a small MOSFET as its load, which lets it deliver the flow and micro detail valves are good at.

The 993 takes the unusual step of specifying a choke input power supply for the output stage. The choke is nearly as large as the power transformer. The high current spikes conventional supplies pull from the mains are avoided; the choke allows a much more linear current draw, keeping dynamic noise under drive much lower. It offers 140 watts into 8 ohms in Class AB and significantly more into lower impedances — 200 watts into 4 ohms. A 6H6П valve in a grounded grid configuration drives Trilogy's compound output stage, and a massive choke input power supply sits behind it.

Like the 995R, the 994 runs in three modes. In Class A the operating voltage is reduced and quiescent current raised so the output stage's current requirement is more or less constant with respect to signal; output falls to 20 watts rated into 8 ohms, the harmonic structure becomes richer and more fluid, and the amplifier runs significantly warmer. ecoA holds pure Class A the whole time music is being amplified, then drops quiescent current dramatically if no signal is detected for a minute, returning to Class A instantaneously.

The 994 is a mono amplifier and is used in pairs. The original brief was to keep the essential elements that made the 933 successful at a significantly lower cost. It is a fully discrete design with no generic integrated circuits, so Nic Poulson controls every crucial parameter of the active circuit and optimises it for this application alone. The small, light drivers in headphones sit very close to the ear and are ruthlessly revealing.

The audio circuit operates in pure single ended Class A with active constant current sources. Each channel has a single continuously biased output device, so the output is free from crossover distortion and the device is held at a constant temperature. An oversized linear power supply gives the active circuitry good operating headroom. Two stereo line inputs feed an audio grade ALPS volume control, and branded components are used throughout.

The output devices dissipate enough heat to need a heatsink. An extruded off-the-shelf part would have served; Trilogy uses a custom CNC machined one instead. Semiconductors are sensitive to mechanical vibration and their characteristics vary with temperature, so attaching the output devices to a high mass with a low resonant signature and large thermal inertia is worth the cost. Assembly is done entirely by hand in Trilogy's UK workshops. Standard finish is a soft natural silver, with lustrous paint finishes optional.

Topology: fully discrete, no integrated circuits; pure single ended Class A with active constant current sources; one continuously biased output device per channel

Output power: 800 mW into 60 ohms; 200 mW into 300 ohms

Output impedance: 10 ohms or less

Inputs: 2 stereo line, 4 RCA phono sockets; 50 kohms or greater

Volume control: audio grade ALPS

Gain (max): 18 dB

Frequency response: 20 Hz – 20 kHz +/- 0.5 dB

Distortion (THD): 0.05% or less, 10 mW into 300 ohms

Signal to noise ratio: 85 dB A weighted or better

Phase: phase correct (non inverting)

Dimensions / weight: 140 x 237 x 50 mm / 1.7 kg; 16 W

The H1 is an energiser for electrostatic headphones and the first product from Trilogy's Special Products Division. SPD products are, by their nature, niche and limited in production run, and each one is hand assembled and tested by Nic Poulson personally. After trialling variations of the Stax circuit used by many other manufacturers, Poulson concluded that the accepted wisdom and circuitry could not advance the product to Trilogy's design goals, and started again.

The result is a pure Class A, fully balanced circuit with wide bandwidth and zero feedback. Two toroidal transformers are used, one for heating the triodes and one for the rest of the H1. The tube circuit uses high transconductance military specification tubes throughout — four 6C3П input tubes and two 6H6П output tubes. Wiring is Teflon coated point to point silver plated copper, and the PTFE/Teflon output sockets have gold plated contacts, suiting Stax and similar electrostatic headphones at 580 volts bias.

Four inputs — two RCA and two XLR — sit at the rear, with one pair of electrostatic sockets recessed into the front fascia. Two versions are made: a direct mode model (DMV), which selects inputs remotely, and a fully functioned remote version that adds volume, balance and mute. A DMV can be upgraded to the full featured version by returning it to Trilogy for chip and firmware updates.

Type: electrostatic headphone energiser; first Trilogy Special Products Division product

Topology: pure Class A, fully balanced, zero feedback, wide bandwidth; two toroidal transformers

Valve complement: 4x 6C3П, 2x 6H6П; approximately 5,000 hours service life

Bias voltage: 580 VDC

Inputs: 2 pairs XLR 3-pin female (66 kohms or greater); 2 pairs RCA (33 kohms or greater)

Gain (max): 56 dB

Frequency response: 10 Hz – 50 kHz +/- 0.5 dB

Phase: phase correct (non inverting)

Versions: direct mode (DMV) or full featured remote; DMV upgradeable at the factory

Power consumption: 55 W / 1 W standby

Dimensions / weight: 260 x 392 x 88 mm / 6.7 kg
