ortofon-mc-x50-cartridge
Ortofon MC X50 Cartridge

The MC X50 is the top of Ortofon's MC X series and the cartridge in the line a serious analog buyer notices on the spec sheet first. A nude Micro Ridge diamond on a boron cantilever. Coils wound in high-purity silver. A 0.4 mV output the moving-coil phono stages in the $3K–$10K range were designed to receive, into a stainless-steel-and-honeycomb body that does the engineering case quietly. This is the stack the cartridge world reserved for its reference tier a generation ago, in a Danish-built product at a price the serious vinyl listener can commit to.

The Micro Ridge profile is the most refined diamond geometry in general production. Where the Shibata that sits one step below it on the X series traces the groove with a long narrow contact patch, the Micro Ridge cuts that patch finer still — a profile shaped to follow the original cutter's path within microns. The contact area is narrower, the pressure on the groove wall is lower, and the diamond reads inner detail the broader profiles smear into the air around it. A nude Micro Ridge — diamond cut and polished as one piece, with no metal shank between the stone and the cantilever — keeps the moving mass as low as the profile allows, and the moving mass is what the cartridge spends its working life arguing with.

Boron is the cantilever material that makes the Micro Ridge heard. It is light, it is stiff, and it transmits the small mechanical events at the stylus tip to the generator without smearing them on the way. The combination of the Micro Ridge profile and the boron cantilever is what the MC X50 is built around. The silver coil set behind the cantilever — wound from high-purity silver wire — completes the signal path with the lowest practical impedance and the cleanest possible signature into the phono stage.

The body departs from the rest of the X series. The X50 is built around a MIM stainless-steel housing and a honeycomb-core internal structure — a frame stiff enough to anchor the generator against any mechanical event the platter is willing to deliver, and damped against the small resonances a lighter alloy chassis cannot completely avoid. The suspension is a new compound, formulated for this cartridge, that holds the cantilever at the working tracking force without contributing motion of its own. The engineering choices are conservative and they compound.

What the listener hears is the consequence of the choices on the spec sheet rather than the marketing language for them. Transients arrive intact. The leading edge of a piano note, the breath before a vocal line, the brush against the cymbal — those events sit in the air rather than smearing into the air around them. Dynamic contrasts are full. Channel separation at 28 dB places voices and instruments at the exact point in the room the recording placed them. The noise floor falls away in the way an analog front end is supposed to make it fall away when the cartridge stops contributing its own. Records the listener thought they knew show another layer.

The MC X50 tracks at 2.0 grams. The 8.6-gram body and 14 µm/mN compliance place it comfortably on any medium-mass tonearm — the Reed and Thales arms in Alma's lineup are natural partners, and any well-built 9- to 12-inch arm the customer already owns will reward the upgrade. Frequency response is flat from 20 Hz to 20 kHz within a decibel. Channel balance holds to half a decibel. The output is the same 0.4 mV the rest of the MC X series carries — the cartridge is at home with every quality moving-coil phono input in production.

Available at both Alma showrooms by appointment. The MC X50 responds to careful setup; we are happy to install and align the cartridge on the customer's tonearm as part of the purchase.
