Japanese Precision Audio Since 1972 — The Reference for the Listener Who Has Already Compared

Accuphase Laboratory was founded in Yokohama, Japan, in June 1972 by Jiro Kasuga — formerly the engineering force behind Trio (Kenwood) — and a small team of senior audio engineers determined to build, in their own words, equipment without compromise to fashion. More than fifty years later, the company is still family-led, still operating from the same single facility on Shin-Yokohama, still building only audio components, and still refusing to mass-produce. Every Accuphase chassis is hand-assembled, every transformer is wound in-house, and every unit ships only through a controlled network of specialist dealers. The model lineup turns slowly — generations are measured in seven-to-ten-year cycles — and a model designation, once retired, is not casually revived.

The engineering signature is consistent and distinctive. The AAVA volume control (Accuphase Analog Vari-gain Amplifier) replaces conventional resistor-network attenuators with a current-domain summing topology that has no moving wiper in the signal path. Power amplification follows the instrumentation-amplifier principle with current-feedback topology, MCS+ parallel-input stages for low-noise summation, and damping factors consistently held at 500 to 1,000 across the line. The A-series runs Class A; the P-series and the higher E-series run Class A/B with bipolar or MOS-FET output devices depending on the model. Digital sources have moved to the MDSD / MDS++ topology — eight parallel D/A channels driven from ES9038PRO or ES9028PRO converters, with ANCC (Active Noise Cancelling Circuit) for analog-stage noise rejection. The chassis are not subtle: brushed-gold faceplates, large-format analog VU meters, blue-illuminated displays, machined-aluminum casework, high-carbon cast-iron isolator feet.

That last point matters for how Accuphase fits into Alma's lineup. It is, alongside Luxman and Esoteric, the Japanese heritage authority. Its visual identity is as recognized in the high-end audio world as McIntosh's blue meters or Audio Research's wheat-and-black livery. Accuphase customers are typically experienced listeners who have already auditioned the McIntosh tier, the Mark Levinson tier, and the European tube-versus-solid-state debates, and have decided the answer is Japanese engineering discipline, decade-stable design, and a single point of factory accountability. They are buying into the brand, not around it.
