Audio Hungary Qualiton: Hungarian Tube Amplification, Half a Century of Heritage

Audio Hungary builds the Qualiton line of tube amplifiers in Nyíregyháza in eastern Hungary, drawing on a lineage that traces back to BEAG — the Budapest Electroacoustic Factory that built the sound system for the 1980 Moscow Olympics and was once the largest electroacoustic manufacturer in the Eastern Bloc. When BEAG broke apart during the 1990s privatization, the Nyíregyháza plant continued as Univox; Audio Hungary Kft acquired Univox in 2014 and launched the Qualiton brand in 2015 with a deliberate focus on premium home audio. The factory winds its own output transformers in-house using modern toroidal and linear coil winding equipment, every chassis is hand-assembled, and engineers fine-tune designs by listening to live symphony performances rather than measurement charts alone.

The integrated lineup spans from the compact A35 (Class A push-pull, KT-series tubes) and the A75 (50 watts of pure Class A), through the X200 (a fully balanced 100-watt Class A/B integrated with built-in headphone amp, compatible with KT88 through KT170 output tubes), to the 300B Integrated (single-ended triode, 25 watts of pure tone). The Classic Series adds the P200 power amplifier, the C200 preamplifier (built around eight Tungsram ECC83 tubes), the Qualiton Phono, and a dedicated MC step-up transformer.
