Java Hi-Fi: New Zealand-Built Solid-State Amplification, Modern Engineering

Java Hi-Fi is a New Zealand-based manufacturer building solid-state amplifiers around two unusual choices: light-dependent resistor (LDR) volume control and gallium nitride (GaN) FET output stages. The combination is uncommon in high-end audio — LDR attenuation gets the resistor out of the signal path the way audiophiles always wanted, and GaN FET output devices switch faster and cleaner than the silicon transistors that have defined power amplification for fifty years. The result is a sound that's neither classic-tube warm nor traditional-Class-AB-solid-state — it's its own thing.

The Single Shot family covers an integrated amplifier, separate stereo power amplifier, and matching preamplifier — entry points to the brand's voicing at 200 watts per channel into 8 ohms with full source-input flexibility (DAC, phono, Bluetooth, headphone amp). The Double Shot family extends the same engineering with greater output power, refined components, and more sophisticated implementation across integrated, stereo amplifier, and preamplifier configurations.
