  • EISA Award 2024-2025 — Best Product, Integrated Amplifier

The RA280 is HiFi Rose's most accessible integrated amplifier, and it makes very few concessions to get there. It is a complete two-channel system in one box — 250 watts per channel, a moving-magnet phono stage, a balanced input, real tone controls, and the illuminated analog meters that have become a HiFi Rose signature — built to the same standard of engineering and finish as the components above it in the line. It is also the natural amplifier partner for a HiFi Rose streamer such as the RS250A or the RS451: connect the streamer, add a turntable and speakers, and the system is finished.

Advanced Class D With GaN FETs

The RA280 is built around HiFi Rose's Advanced Class D amplification, and the key to it is the switching device: next-generation GaN (Gallium Nitride) FETs in place of conventional silicon. GaN switches faster and cleaner, which lets the amplifier track the music signal with near-perfect linearity and very low distortion across the full audio band and well beyond it. The result is the efficiency and grip that Class D is known for, without the hardness that gave early Class D its reputation — sound that is smooth, accurate, and quiet.

Two Separated Mono Amplifier Modules

Inside the RA280 are two completely separated mono amplifier modules, one for the left channel and one for the right, each delivering 250 watts into both 8-ohm and 4-ohm loads. Keeping the two channels physically and electrically apart means neither channel's demands intrude on the other — the benefit shows up as wide, stable stereo imaging and composure when the music gets loud and dense. With 250 watts a side, the RA280 has the headroom to drive real loudspeakers properly, not just to play them.

A Two-Stage Analog Filter

Every Class D amplifier needs to remove its high-frequency switching artifacts from the output, and the quality of that filtering is a large part of how a Class D amplifier ends up sounding. HiFi Rose pairs the GaN output stage with an advanced two-stage analog filter. Its LC stage holds frequency response essentially flat into the high treble — down just 1 dB at 65 kHz — while keeping carrier noise out of the signal that reaches your speakers. It is a quiet, linear foundation, and it is audible as clarity and air.

A Phono Stage for Moving-Magnet Cartridges

The RA280 has a genuine analog phono stage built in, on its own RCA input, designed for moving-magnet cartridges and presenting the standard 47kΩ load. High-precision compensation circuitry applies accurate RIAA equalization so records play back the way they were cut. A turntable connects directly to the RA280 — no separate phono preamplifier, no extra box, no extra interconnect.

Tone Controls, and the Switch to Bypass Them

The RA280 gives you treble and bass controls with a usefully wide ±15 dB range — enough to correct a bright room or a thin recording, or simply to tune the sound to taste. When you would rather hear the source untouched, a tone-control bypass switch takes the entire tone circuit out of the signal path. You get the adjustment when you want it and the shortest path when you do not.

The Illuminated Analog Meters

A pair of illuminated analog VU meters spans the RA280's front panel — the kind of detail that makes an amplifier a pleasure to live with as well as to listen to. A 3-level dimmer sets the front-panel illumination to suit the room, from fully lit to discreet. They are functional, they are beautiful, and they make the music visible from across the room.

Inputs, Outputs, and a Place for a Subwoofer

Connectivity is complete without being complicated: three line-level RCA inputs, one balanced XLR input, and the dedicated MM phono input cover sources from a streamer to a CD player to a turntable. A mono RCA subwoofer output lets you add a powered sub when a room or a pair of speakers calls for it. It is a thoughtfully complete set of connections for a real system.

Built Like the Components Above It

The RA280 is constructed from solid aluminum and rust-proof steel, with the fit and finish HiFi Rose applies across its range. It measures 16.93" wide, 13.98" deep, and 4.06" high, and weighs 20.94 lbs, and it is offered in black or silver. Its standing is not a matter of opinion alone: the RA280 earned the EISA Award 2024-2025 for Best Product, Integrated Amplifier — recognition that this is an amplifier performing well beyond its price.
