EMT 912-HI Tonearm

The EMT 912-HI is a 12-inch tonearm designed to carry a hi-fi cartridge — one built for a fixed half-inch mount rather than the removable broadcast Tondose — with the full mechanical discipline of the EMT tonearm program.

The construction reads like a small clock. Over 150 individual parts, each machined from solid material — stainless steel for the base and structural elements, aluminum alloy for the moving parts — are assembled by hand at the workbench in Switzerland. The bearings and manufacturing techniques are contemporary; the design principles, the way mass distributes around the pivot and the way the arm addresses the record, follow the reference EMT drew for itself decades ago and has not seen a reason to abandon.

The headshell is rigidly fixed — no removable slide, no auxiliary contacts in the signal path — with azimuth adjustment retained for setup. The arm accommodates any EMT hi-fi cartridge in its 8-to-25-gram tracking range. Effective length is 310.15 mm. Effective mass is 11.4 grams. Offset is 17.55 degrees; overhang is 13.15 mm; null points are 120.9 and 66.04 mm.

The audible payoff of a 12-inch arm over a 9-inch is a lower tracking-angle error across the record — meaning cleaner tracking at the outer edge, where transients are most demanding, and a more relaxed presentation at the innermost grooves, where the geometry has traditionally been least kind to the music. The 912-HI delivers this without the mass, resonance, or wiring compromises that a long arm has historically forced on its designer.

Two termination options are offered: the standard wire outlet with a 20-centimetre lead, or a 5-pin DIN outlet for the customer running a modular phono cabling scheme.
