Neat Acoustics

Neat Acoustics builds loudspeakers in Barnard Castle, County Durham, in the north of England. Bob Surgeoner founded the company in 1989 as a small hi-fi shop. Its first product, the Neat Petite, appeared the same year and went into full production in 1991. By 1993 Neat had become a full-time loudspeaker manufacturer, and it has built by hand ever since.

Surgeoner was a performing and recording musician for more than twenty years before he designed loudspeakers, and Neat is direct about what that means for its method: measurements inform the process, but the final judgement is always made by ear. Designs are developed against real instruments and refined through listening rather than theory alone. The stated aim is a loudspeaker that carries not only the accuracy of a recording but the intent behind the performance.

Four ranges are in production. The Iota range puts full-scale performance into small cabinets — the Iota II is a 2.6-litre standmount, and the Iota Alpha II is a 45 cm floorstander with an upward-firing mid/bass driver, a downward-firing subwoofer and a 50 mm EMIT planar magnetic tweeter. The Classic range traces back to the original Petite and runs Petite Classic, Mystique Classic and Elite Classic, with the Vito Classic at the top. The Strata series pairs a true ribbon tweeter with isobaric bass loading across the Majistra standmount and the Orkestra floorstander. The Momentum series applies Neat's Ultimatum-derived engineering — AMT tweeter, isobaric bass loading, mechanically decoupled front baffle — to the Momentum JS and Momentum J6.

Two engineering ideas recur across the line. The first is isobaric bass loading: two bass drivers working as a coupled pair inside a sealed chamber. It produces low-frequency extension and control that a cabinet of that volume would not otherwise give. The Orkestra is 22 cm wide and Neat quotes it to 20 Hz. The second is mechanical quiet — the front baffle decoupled on a flexible membrane, the crossover hard-wired, the enclosure damped — so the drivers work against a structure that stays still.

Hi-Fi+ has named the Orkestra its Floorstanding Loudspeaker of the Year and the Ekstra its High-Value Loudspeaker of the Year, describing Neat's speakers as "designed almost solely by ear, listening to music rather than test-tones."

What this means in a real room: Neat speakers are small for what they do. Cabinet widths run 19 to 22 cm across most of the line and the floorstanders stop near a metre tall. They fit rooms where a conventional speaker of the same bass extension would not, and they do not demand large amplifiers — every recommended power range in the line starts at 25 watts.

The line runs from $1,499 to $12,999 per pair. Neat is available at both Alma showrooms — Alma West in San Diego and Alma East in Sterling, Virginia.
