Lindemann

For more than thirty-five years, Lindemann has been building audio in Germany to one idea, set down by its founder and designer Norbert Lindemann: less is more. As the company puts it, great sound is no coincidence — it is a decision. In practice that means fewer components, shorter signal paths and a complete focus on music reproduction, in electronics engineered and made in Germany.

Where much of high-end audio adds chassis, features and mass, Lindemann does the opposite and engineers what is left to a high standard. The thread through the whole catalogue is timing: ultra-low-jitter MEMS femto clocks, careful jitter reduction and quiet linear power supplies, on the principle that digital audio is not just bits but the precise moment each one arrives. The result is meant to sound transparent, dynamic and detailed, and never cold or analytical — engineering in the service of music.

The line is organised into three families. Woodnote is the streaming series: compact, aluminium-cased components made for network audio, from the BRIDGE transport through the SOLO streaming converter to the COMBO, a complete streaming amplifier the size of a book. Musicbook is the full-size system, book-shaped and complete, spanning the SOURCE II streaming preamplifier (with an optional internal CD drive), the POWER II stereo amplifiers, and the COMBO that folds streaming, conversion, phono, preamplifier and power amplifier into one case. Limetree is high-end in the smallest of formats — single-task devices such as the PHONO II phono stage and the USB-DAC, each doing one job to a standard well beyond its size.

What we like about Lindemann is the engineering. These are small, well-made German components that put their budget into conversion, clocking and power rather than into the size of the box. A Limetree phono stage will surprise a system several times its price; a Woodnote COMBO will run a real pair of loudspeakers, a headphone and the television from one compact chassis; a Musicbook system will hold its own against amplifiers many times its size.
