Preamplifiers

The preamplifier is the system's character. Volume control, input switching, gain — sonically simple jobs that get done very differently across tube and solid-state topologies, and a component the system's voicing rides on more than any other. Buyers committing to a preamp at this tier are usually committing for a decade or longer, so the question is less "which is best on paper" and more "which do you still want to listen through five years from now."

Six lines, balanced between tube and solid-state. Accuphase's C-2900 and C-3900 represent the long Japanese solid-state lineage. Dan D'Agostino's Momentum and Progression preamps, built in Arizona under his own name post-Krell, are the American statement at price points to match. Vinnie Rossi's Brama and L2i-SE bring tube linestages with hybrid output into the boutique American conversation. Nagra's Reference Preamp and HD Preamp from Switzerland anchor the European reference tier. Accustic Arts and Bricasti Design add German and American alternatives at adjacent tiers.
