The AC-6 is Accuphase's moving-coil phono cartridge — a single SKU, single configuration, designed as the analog front end for a complete Accuphase vinyl chain. The brand has long offered top-of-line electronics for vinyl playback; the AC-6 closes the loop by providing a cartridge engineered to the same standards as the C-57 phono preamplifier and the C-2900 / C-3900S line preamplifiers it feeds.
A boron cantilever with a semi line-contact stylus. The cantilever material in a phono cartridge determines how cleanly mechanical motion at the stylus is transferred to the coils — too soft a material loses high-frequency information; too brittle a material rings. Solid boron is one of the small set of materials with the right combination of stiffness, low mass, and internal damping for top-tier MC cartridges. The semi line-contact stylus shape extends the contact area along the groove modulation, allowing the cartridge to read fine micro-modulations that an elliptical or simple conical stylus would average out.
N50 neodymium magnet. The N50-grade neodymium permanent magnet is among the strongest grades available in commercial production. A stronger magnet allows the cartridge to produce its rated output voltage from fewer coil windings, which lowers the coils' moving mass and improves the cartridge's high-frequency tracking ability. Lower moving mass at the coils translates directly into improved transient response and a more open top end.
Aluminum body with titanium base. The cartridge body is extruded aluminum with a gold-colored alumite (anodized) surface finish; the base — the section that contacts the headshell — is titanium. This composite construction manages resonance: aluminum dissipates energy across a broad spectrum, titanium provides rigidity at the cartridge-to-tonearm interface where any compliance would degrade the cartridge's ability to track the groove accurately.
The Accuphase vinyl chain, completed. Most Accuphase customers building a vinyl-capable system pair the AC-6 with the C-57 phono preamplifier, or with the C-2900 line preamplifier fitted with the AD-2900 phono module. The cartridge's electrical characteristics are documented to allow precise loading and gain matching on either stage. For listeners running an integrated amplifier with the AD-60 phono board, the AC-6 is also a fully-supported front end.
