The TSD Novel is the Tondose reworked with EMT's Novel Technology — the multi-layer core transducer and the titanium/sapphire cantilever assembly, in the broadcast Tondose body the studios installed in the tens of thousands from 1965 forward.
The body itself was revised in 2020: milled from a solid block of magnesium, chosen for the stiffness-to-mass ratio a broadcast cartridge asks for and the well-behaved resonance profile magnesium delivers when it is machined rather than cast. The 2021 Novel transducer sits inside that body — a multi-layer core generator, a titanium carrier holding a sapphire cantilever beam, an MR HP high-polish multi-radius diamond at the groove.
Output transfer level is 0.21 mV/cm. Coil impedance is 2 × 18 Ω per channel. Recommended load is 200 to 300 ohms. Tracking force is 2.2 grams. Weight is 17.5 grams. Compliance is 12 µm/mN. Frequency response is 20 to 30,000 Hz, with the ±2 dB window from 40 to 12,500 Hz — the broadcast reference envelope.
The mount is a choice at order time. Standard is the direct EMT Tondose fitting for the EMT 909 or 912 professional tonearms. INT is a fitting compatible with Ortofon A mounts. X is a fitting compatible with SME. The generator is the same across all three; only the connection at the arm changes.
