Fezz Audio Argentum Step-Up Transformer

Argentum is a moving-coil step-up transformer — the specialist component that lets the lowest-output moving-coil cartridges drive a phono stage cleanly. It raises the cartridge's very small signal with a transformer rather than with added electronic gain, which is the quietest, most natural way to do it. Argentum is for the analog listener at the deep end of the hobby, running a low-output moving-coil cartridge and wanting the best way to amplify it.

A low-output moving-coil cartridge produces a signal so small that an ordinary moving-magnet phono stage cannot bring it to a usable level. A step-up transformer solves this passively: it boosts the signal voltage by transformer action alone, with no active electronics and no added electronic noise, before the signal reaches the phono stage. Argentum is offered in two versions — a 20 dB version and a 26 dB version — and the right one is chosen to match the output of the specific cartridge. Transformer engineering is the foundation of the Fezz Audio family business, through its sister company Toroidy, and a step-up transformer is that expertise in its most concentrated form.

Passive Moving-Coil Step-Up. Argentum boosts a low-output MC cartridge signal by transformer action alone — no active gain stage, no added electronic noise — for the cleanest, most natural amplification of a low-output cartridge.

20 dB or 26 dB Version. Argentum is offered in two gain versions. The right version depends on your cartridge's output; selecting it correctly is a short conversation, and one we are glad to have with you.

The Fezz colored steel chassis is a signature of the brand, and Argentum is offered across the full Fezz Audio color range — Black Ice, Sunlight, Big Calm, Burning Red, Moonlight, Evergreen, and Republika — so the step-up transformer can be chosen to suit the room it will live in. Black Ice and Sunlight are the standard stocked finishes; the others are built to order as a special order, so please allow up to 12 weeks for delivery.
