Piega is a Swiss loudspeaker maker that has spent four decades doing one thing better than almost anyone else: building ribbon transducers and mating them to extruded aluminum cabinets that disappear from the music. The company was founded in 1986 on Lake Zurich, and every speaker that wears the Piega badge — from the entry models to the limited-edition flagships — is still assembled by hand in Horgen, Switzerland. The ribbon-tweeter architecture that defines the brand is not borrowed technology. Piega develops and manufactures its own ribbon drivers in-house, including the coaxial ribbon module that places the midrange and treble at a single physical point and resolves the time-alignment problem that conventional two-way and three-way crossovers can only approximate. The cabinets are pulled from a single piece of extruded aircraft-grade aluminum, internally damped with Piega's Tension Improve Module to remove panel resonance before it can color the sound. The result is a presentation that listeners describe in the same vocabulary year after year: fast, clean, dimensionally precise, and free of the boxy signature that almost every traditional cabinet imposes on the music.
The Master Line Source 2 Gen2 is the line-source principle distilled into a single-cabinet floorstander — the same philosophy as the MKII LTD flagship, executed in a form factor that fits the listening rooms most owners actually have. The driver array combines four line-source ribbon elements, two 220 mm UHQD woofers, and two 220 mm UHQD passive radiators, all integrated into a 168 cm extruded aluminum cabinet with Piega's Tension Improve Module suppressing cabinet contribution to the signal. The line-source ribbon array radiates a coherent cylindrical wavefront, which gives the MLS 2 Gen2 the rare ability to project a stable, full-scale soundstage at any reasonable listening distance — the sweet spot opens up rather than collapsing. The dipole pattern engages the room in a controlled way that adds dimensional depth without the diffuse glare that plagues most dipoles. Reviewers have consistently noted that the MLS 2 Gen2 plays larger than its footprint suggests, with bass extension and dynamic headroom that read as multi-cabinet at first listen.
The MLS 2 Gen2 is for the listener who has heard a true line-source done well and decided that nothing else quite reproduces the same illusion of being in the same physical space as the recording. It is also, candidly, where Piega's value argument against the famous-name flagships gets very direct. The shortlist of competitors at this performance level is short, and most of them cost considerably more.
